Eagle Mountain.

Ever since the way his debut trial had ended, there was something in the air that constantly compelled him to return to the area. It wasn't just the bitter chill, which was nonetheless refreshing. It was the lure of a mystery, an unsolved case, an itch at the back of his mind that he could not scratch.

The truth of the matter is, Miles Edgeworth is no idiot. And even though he should be satisfied that another murderer was off the streets, as his mentor was so fond of reminding him, the events towards the end of that fateful day left a bitter taste in his mouth.

Edgeworth's only regret should be that he did not get Fawles his guilty verdict sooner. And yet, there are so many doubts that plague his mind.

His most recent search of the area had uncovered no new leads, and his investigation ended in much the same vein as those prior, with Edgeworth standing on the Dusky Bridge, hands gripping the rope of the railing, staring deep into the depths of the river wondering what it would take to jump in the water below.

To jump and leave one's old life behind, just like Mia Fey alleged that Dahlia Hawthorne had done.

( Edgeworth is no stranger to flight delays, considering the frequency with which he travels. Therefore, it is frustrating but unsurprising when he finds himself stuck in the terminal, listlessly browsing the shelves of a bookstore just to pass the time. At least no-one's been murdered, as far as he's aware.

He's all caught up on his work for once and has nothing to do and no-one to talk to...

... until he sees a familiar face out of the corner of his eye.

His mentor's daughter, almost vibrating with her trademark barely-repressed anger. Despite her propensity towards violence, Edgeworth's spirits are nonetheless brightened by the sight of her. With more of a spring in his step than the situation truly entails, he approaches Franziska with a trace of a smirk on his face. )

Franziska von Karma.

( It can be fun to tease her mannerisms sometimes. Certainly, it will probably get him whipped, but that's not anything he can't handle. )

The last stop in the family's vacation is a resort on the North Sea in Germany; soon, they will all return to the States, and life will go back to normal. The thought brings relief, but Edgeworth is still yet to process it. Perhaps some time at the beach will help? He doubts it. Even though he's still wearing his shoes, he swears he can feel the sand between his toes. God, when was the last time he'd been to the beach?

Still, at least Gregoria seems to be enjoying herself. That's as much as he can hope for. Some days, he is still overwhelmed by the surge of affection he feels when he looks at his daughter (his daughter). Already dressed in her swimsuit and a sun hat, she runs ahead of her mother before pulling up in front of Edgeworth and performing a polite little bow.

"Dad? Please help me build a sandcastle."

The look Edgeworth throws over Gregoria's head can only be described as stricken panic.

Integra, dear, darling...

... save him?
